Meeting Notes-November 2023

MEETING TO ORDER:

     President, Jeff KSØJD, called to order the 2023 annual business meeting of the SFTARC at 08:06 AM CST. A total of 24 members attended, 17 joining in person at the Gardner Perkins and 7 joining via Zoom. (Quorum is 13.)

 


 

SECRETARY-TREASURER REPORT: 

     Marty, KEØPEZ, gave the annual report, as required by the By-laws. This report included the present bank balance, lists of the expenditures and receipts for the year, the operating events we have held this year, the status of the search for a repeater site, the number of members of the club, the quorum for meetings in fiscal 2024, the 2023 ham class, and equipment purchased in 2023. The club is not in debt and has sufficient reserve for its activities.

OTHER BUSINESS:

Repeater Update [Jim -KØNK]

     Communications with officials about a repeater site are slowly moving forward. A backup repeater is on the air in Gardner (147.195 MHz +600)

ARRL Special Service Club

      SFTARC continues to provide service to the amateur radio community as a Special Service Club. Marty will check to see if anything needs to be submitted to ARRL to maintain our status. President Jeff asked for a volunteer to be a card checker. For more details, please contact one of the club officers.

Officer elections [Jeff- KSØJD]

      George, Larry, and Marty were nominated as President, Vice-President, and Secretary, respectively. There were no additional nominations from the floor. The three nominees were elected by unanimous consent. George thanked Jeff for doing a great job as President of the club for the last 5 years.

2024 Ham Class [Jim - KØNK]

      It was moved and seconded to conduct two 2024 ham classes, Tech and CW, and to authorize the club to spend up to $600 for textbooks and other items to prepare for the classes. The motion passed unanimously. After receiving tuition payments from students, the class is expected to break even. Classes starts Jan. 6, 2024. Registration closes Dec. 26, 2023.

ARRL VOTA program

    Rob, KØRAR, spoke about the VOTA program and urged club members to use LOTW. Marty is the Kansas Coordinator for the Kansas W1AW/Ø VOTA event that runs Nov. 8-14.

SFTARC Website

    Greg gave a status report. The site backup feature proved to be extremely useful. Many users find the nets listing feature of most interest.

ADJOURN:

     President Jeff adjourned the meeting at about 9:00 AM.

Technician Class - 2024

Tech Lisc Manual 5th Edition

 

     SFTARC will be conducting an Technician License Class and Morse Code Class beginning on January 6, 2024, and ending on February 23 (8 lessons followed by an exam session in March). Classes run each Saturday morning beginning with a Morse code class at 8:15 am followed by the Technician class at 9:30 am, ending approximately 12:30 pm.

 

     This Technician class is an entry level class for those who wish to become an Licensed Amateur Radio Operator.

     The Morse Code (CW) is taught at a beginner’s level, with a goal of the student achieving a 5-
wpm speed at the end of the 8 weeks. Practical techniques for using the code are also taught.

     The currently available class information is listed below. The textbook is the ARRL Ham Radio License Manual, 5th Edition (ISBN: 978-1-62595-155-7). Click the "Class Overview" link below for further class details

ARRL Exam Review

     Registration deadline is 12/26/2023 if you would like SFTARC to provide your book. The registration deadline is January 5, 2024, if you provide your own book, which can be ordered from both ARRL and Amazon. Please let us know if you are interested in attending this class by completing the "Registration" form on this website as soon as possible so we can judge the demand for the class.

     Register early to insure that your book is available by the first class session. Class payment should be cash, check, or PayPal (no credit cards, please) to be collected at the first class session. See the class overview for more details.
